On Loss

And the oak stands weary
in the rain
as it has lost so much and
so many

Some leaves just drifted away,
Some leaves the oak itself let go
And others were roughly taken
by the wind

Yet, it still has its own stem
And there is the hope,
the soothing promise
of the songbird to return
to make once again
of the oak’s branches his home
